about me

Who is Jessi?

Before becoming a therapist, I received my BA in Education and English Literature. I then went on to obtain a dual masters degree (MAMS) in Student Affairs and Mental Health Counseling. I have spent over 10 years working in a large, urban school district where I have encountered people from all walks of life. During my time as an educator, I also worked with the district’s Queer Equity Committee, collaborating with others to make life at school safe and welcoming for queer students, educators, and staff. This work is what helped me to realize that I wanted a career in counseling.

In addition to my education and professional experience, I have a full lived experience. I am queer, a mom, divorced, and a person who struggles with her mental health from time to time. I came out as queer after having been in a heterosexual relationship for most of my adult life. I know what it is like to go through a major life transition, and understand the fear that comes with taking those steps forward in being your authentic self. I will bring that experience with me into the therapy room.

Why Perthynas?

Perthynas is the Welsh word for “relationship” or “connection.” I have chosen this name for my practice for several reasons. First, my ancestry is Welsh and I love to represent that history whenever I can. Secondly, I chose it because I feel very strongly that our relationships shape our entire lived experience. These relationships include those we have with ourselves, with others, with our society, with the environment, with the medical community, with substances, etc. The symbol in my logo is a Dara knot. This represents strength and resilience. It is my hope that through our work examining the relationships in your lives, you will realize your own strength and resilience.
